For some reason, I stumbled upon the US National Archives Flickr a few weeks ago.  You can look through those old pictures for hours.  Here are my faves:

This article on Good.is shows some cool DIY design in public places in cities in the US.  Some of the projects encourage people to walk and ride bikes, like seats for pedestrians to take a break on the sidewalk and painting your own bike lane in the street, and others just make the public spaces look pretty!
